Veni Sancte Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit)
Veni Sancte Spiritus, also called the “Golden Sequence,” is a Latin liturgical prayer that is sung or recited to commemorate Pentecost – the moment when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the nascent Church. It is usually attributed to either the thirteenth-century Pope Innocent III or to the Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton. (Langton was a central figure in the dispute between King John of England and Pope Innocent III that help lead to the issuing of Magna Carta in 1215 – one of the first charters that guaranteed the rights of commoners and restricted the heretofore “divine right” of kings to rule autocratically. He is also credited with having divided the Bible into the standard modern arrangement of chapters used today.)
Whatever your denomination, this is an anointed prayer if there ever was one (excepting the Lord’s Prayer, of course). I would encourage you to make it an occasional part of your devotional life.
